Our old girls and current 1st
XI hockey team
took on the challenge of the annual Alumni hockey match last weekend.
Clifton High School had a strong squad of players, even introducing two
Year 9 girls to the higher level of hockey. Some of the girls had
already played in the Alumni Netball game so needed to rely on their
fitness levels to help them through. All of the girls worked hard and
fought for every ball. The ‘Old girls’ were first to score from a
successful short corner routine, but Clifton High School were soon to
respond with a brilliant set of passes, Christina Bendle, Catherine
Allin and Lia Persad linking perfectly to bring it to 1-1. With minutes
to go the Alumni managed to catch our defence by surprise and score in
open play ending the game 2-1. This however is a great achievement for
XI as this narrow loss shows how determined and prepared they are for the year ahead!
Also, the ever popular and well supported annual Alumni netball
contest against the school 1stVII netball team was once again played at
Coombe Dingle last Saturday. The Alumni teams have become a great deal
stronger over recent years with many of the returning “Old Girls”, all
under 30, having continued their netball experiences through
universities and in clubs, reflecting their ongoing love and enthusiasm
for the game that has persisted since their school days!
The alumni team boasted ex Head and Deputy Head girls both from last
year and from the past! Ably captained by Sarah Barton they were able to
field an extremely strong side that really challenged the newly formed
school 1st VII. Their excellent shooting provided our defence
with a fierce challenge and up until half time the match was reasonably
even! However the superior shooting of Sophie Lillywhite, a current
Avon League player on the Alumni team saw the score escalate rapidly
with the final outcome being an emphatic 26 goal to 9 victory to the
more mature and experienced team! School captain Natasha West and the
remainder of a potential 1st VII enjoyed the match and gained from the experience and have clear pointers on the work needed for their forthcoming season!
It is always a pleasure to catch up with ex pupils and discover where
their exciting career pathways have led them, so they can give
inspiration to our current senior girls.
