On Monday, the Textiles and Art Departments returned to Elmlea Junior School for their annual Arts Week, following a successful Masterclass last year. The theme this year was ‘The Environment’ and ninety Year 5 children were asked to create a 3D Google Earth map of central Bristol, ably assisted by Year 12 Art and Textiles students, Daisy, Laila and Maiwenn.
Children worked together in groups to create nine large square sections of the map using textiles and art printing techniques. Recycled fabric and patchwork were sewn together to make Bristol landmarks, which included the Lloyds Building, the SS Great Britain, the Matthew Ship, the Bear Pit and Cabot Circus amongst many others. Once joined together, the squares created the Bristol city landscape.
All the Year 5 children were enthusiastic throughout the Masterclass session and displayed excellent teamwork. The 3D map was impressive and the children were proud of the final result!
