Mathematics is an essential skill in everyday life; it is creative, enjoyable and challenging and develops knowledge, skills and understanding of number, calculating, shape, space, measure, reasoning and problem solving. Children are provided with a wide range of resources, materials, technologies and learning experiences which promote and extend their individual interests allowing them to explore, practise and talk about their developing understanding through stories, songs, games and imaginative play.
The environment is stimulating both indoors and outside to allow for individual learning styles and meaningful, concrete, interconnected understanding. Through play and adult initiated activities children develop the specific language of mathematics and their own graphics leading to the use of conventional mathematical symbols and notation.
As they progress through the Foundation Stage we foster children's mathematical interest, curiosity, competence and confidence so they develop a positive attitude to Mathematics with a sense of enjoyment and satisfaction in readiness for their continued learning in Year 1.
