Physical education

21st May 2013
Sport is an important aspect of life at Clifton High School. All our pupils are given the opportunity to discover and develop their sporting abilities in both individual and team sports. We want to ensure that all pupils discover an area of sport that they enjoy and the pleasure in living a healthy and active life.

In Years 1 and 2 the children use all of our excellent on-site facilities, with a swimming pool, floodlit tennis, basketball and netball courts and a large lawn. Year 2 children also use our superb playing fields at Coombe Dingle Sports Centre on a weekly basis, where activities are taught or overseen by specialist physical education teachers. Coombe Dingle Sports Centre has four indoor courts, two all-weather pitches and an array of grass pitches. At Key Stage 1 the emphasis in swimming lessons is on gaining water confidence and then developing the main strokes with the chance to gain ASA awards. Specialist teachers work with small groups to ensure rapid progress.

We also enjoy good links with the following clubs who use the facilities at Coomble Dingle as well.  Many of the children at the school play for these clubs and benefit from this relationship.

Rockleaze Rangers Football Club

St Brendans Rugby Club

Old Bristolians

Clifton Rugby Club

Stoke Bishop Cricket Club

In gymnastics and dance, the children learn to develop body control and performance skills and also to observe and assess other children's work. The spacious outdoor areas of the school allow children to develop their physical skills and gain a greater understanding of invasion, net and striking games.

The children have great fun and enjoy developing their inter-personal and team building skills through participation with others.

Once formal school ends the children can participate in recreational clubs for football, tennis, ballet and rugby.
