Geography

21st May 2013
Through our Geography syllabus we aim to instil in the children a love of investigation and an appreciation of their immediate locality and the wonderful world in which we live.

Geography in KS1 is often integrated with other subjects, for example, maths or history.  Children are encouraged to learn about their own local community and understand and appreciate the differences between the UK and other countries in the world.  Children at this age are taught the importance of road safety and they look at ways of improving safety on the streets and roads. Children learn how to use maps, plans, atlases and globes, collect and analyse data and use reference books and IT.

Barnaby Bear travels with a family each holiday and sends postcards and photographs back to school; these are used as a starting point for discussions about different world locations, weather, climate and lifestyles.

Year 1 conduct a traffic survey outside school, walk round the local area and visit a local place of work.  Year 2 undertake a study of pedestrian movement in the local area and look at street furniture.
