IT in an integral part of all our lives and forms a key part of the curriculum. The departmental ethos is to encourage pupils to explore the wide range of software available to them in order to promote their becoming increasingly autonomous users of IT, able to make their own decisions regarding the selection of appropriate software tools as they progress through the school.
Principal software used through the school is: MS Office components (Word/Excel/Access/PowerPoint/Visio); Serif Page Plus (Desktop publishing); Opus (Multimedia authoring). This is supplemented by additional software, e.g. Audacity (for producing sound files) where appropriate.
The IT course is overwhelmingly practical with some theoretical concepts being gradually introduced in the run up to Y10. The practical aspect of the subject is continued through the GCSE course where all pupils follow the AQA short course in IT. This consists of 60% coursework, 40% final written paper.
At AS & A2 advanced practical skills acquisition supports the coursework needs of the exam. Theory sessions are delivered in the style of a tutorial rather than a class-based lesson.
