The Modern Foreign Languages Department boasts excellent facilities including a fully interactive language laboratory. As with other languages, we have a native French speaker as the assistant and all children spend time with her to develop their listening and oral skills. The ‘Encore Tricolore Nouvelle Edition' books are followed through Years 7 - 11.
We work through listening and reading comprehension to speaking, grammar and writing. Equal weight is given to listening, speaking, reading and writing and while we see communication as the most important skill, we encourage pupils to be grammatically accurate too.
French AS & A2 remain a popular choice for many pupils. Élan 1 & 2 are the texts followed. The language laboratory is used for most listening work and much research is done using French internet sites. Students see the language assistant weekly, alone or in pairs.
Aside from classroom learning, we encourage visits from the Onatti theatre company, performing plays in French devised for young learners and we take groups to 6th Form lectures at the University and encourage them to see the many films shown in French at the Watershed.
Trips to the country are an essential part of learning the language and almost every year the department takes pupils in Year 7 to Brittany for a week. Older students often take advantage of the visit to do work experience in France. Every two years the French, Art & Textiles departments combine to take a group of Year 11-13 students to Paris for 5 days. Pupils of all ages, particularly those in Year 10, are encouraged to take part in the well-established Bristol-Bordeaux exchange.
The department runs adult courses for parents, staff and the local community throughout the year.
