English

22nd May 2013

As one of the core subjects of the curriculum, English is taught in separate groups for boys and girls from Year 7 to 11.  Educational research has proven this to be beneficial and allows the pupils to gain the most from this exciting and important subject.

English is taught as an integrated literature and language course. Each year group experiences a wide range of activities encompassing written and spoken assignments. A number of novels, plays and poems are read and studied each year. A play by Shakespeare and an example of pre-twentieth century literature is included in each year's programme.

Although the course is taught as a whole, it leads to the pupils gaining two English GCSEs (Language & Literature) at the end of Year 11.

We offer AS and A2 English Literature. This includes coursework and examination assessments. The AS course focuses on Literature of the First World War and the AZ on Love through the Ages.

To supplement classroom activities, the department runs a literary society and film club for sixth formers. The department also plays an active role in drama productions. There is an annual creative writing competition and regular theatre trips to London, Stratford and local venues.
