Year 9 recently took part in the annual Flying Start Challenge day. The pupils worked in teams of four to plan, design and build a glider out of materials of their choice. Engineers from Airbus gave a masterclass on dynamics of flight and aircraft design at the start of the day and this provided expert tips and inspiration for the pupils.
There were a wide variety of inventive designs and the pupils impressed all with their excellent teamwork and enthusiasm throughout the day.
In the afternoon, the gliders were thrown from the Main Hall Stage in a ‘Fly-off’ competition. Each team had three opportunities to record a long and straight flight, which was judged by the Airbus engineers. In the end, Team Thin Air, consisting of Leah, Imogen, Austin and Olly were victorious, recording a mammoth throw of 15m and 50cm. Close behind them were Holly, May, Nathaniel and Hector from Team Clifton Maverix with 15m exactly; and in third place were Katie, Lucia, Thomas and Gauthier in Team KLTG, with a throw of 13m and 90cm. All three of these teams will progress to the regional final at the Bristol Aerospace Museum on Monday 11th February.
